What to Do When There Isn't a Way Out

"Then they said to Moses: "Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die?  What have you done by bringing us out of Egypt?  Didn't we say to you in Egypt to leave us alone and let us serve the Egyptians?  It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!"  Moses answered the Israelites "Do not be afraid.  Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today.  The Egyptians you see today you will never see again.  The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still."  -Exodus 14:10-14. This week I have been reading in Exodus as for the second year in a row, I am going to read the Bible entirely during the year.  If you have never done this, I highly recommend it.  There are two things that really help me focus on diving into God's word:  1.  Daily reading of the Bible for that day's text, and 2.  Writing this blog.  The t...

"But What if They Don't Believe Me?"

This morning I was reading the story of Moses.  Moses became a tremendous person that was used by God in a tremendous way.  When I think of Moses, I think of the Ten Commandments, him parting the Red Sea and saving the Israelites, and honestly I think about that Disney cartoon from years back.  What I don't think about though is the doubt that Moses had in the beginning of his transformation.  Please don't confuse transformation.  Transforming is entirely an internal change that is directed from inside.  Conforming on the other hand is a forced change due to external pressures. I'm not going to dive into transforming vs. conforming today as that could take a long time, but what I want to dive into is relating to Moses in the beginning of his transformation. In Exodus 3:10, God says to Moses: "So no, go, I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt"  God then goes on to tell Moses his mission and what God wants him to d...

Who Has Authority?

Our world is one that screams control.  I put gas in my car yesterday, and when I turn my key to my car, it will turn on.  When I drive down JTB and I want to go faster, I just press on the right pedal instead of the left.  I have an app on my phone that controls what music I want to hear, the lights in my house, and show me the news I want to see.  If I want to go eat a sandwich for lunch from Firehouse, I can walk down there and give them some money in exchange for a sandwich.  All of these things are from my doing right?  I have authority over my car, my music, my news, and my food.  But what about if you get sick?  We have the authority to take medicine and heal ourselves.  But what about if you get real sick, what if you get cancer?  Do you have authority over the millions and billions of cells in your body?  What if you get side swiped on the way to work today, at no fault of your own, and you end up in a ditch? I am certain...

The Real Work is in Secret

Matthew 6:6 "But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you" I feel like a broken record using this verse, but as we embark on a new year with new ambitions and new goals, I just feel that this is one of the most important verses to focus on.  Multi-tasking is definitely not one of my strengths, and research has show that though many will say they are more productive multi-tasking, or more productive when faced against a deadline, these activities definitely hurt your productivity.  How do you pray?  Do you pray while you are driving into work?  Do you pray when you need something to go right in your life?  Do you pray at the table before a meal?  Any prayer is good prayer, but there is one main importance to praying alone in your room with your door closed:  It is just you and God.  This is the relationship that God has al...
