Thanksgiving came and Thanksgiving went and now the focus is on the weeks leading up to Christmas! For many people this can be the most wonderful time of the year, but can also be the most stressful. Deadlines need to be hit, there are many social commitments, and on top of that you have to figure out gifting! With technology today it's amazing how connected we are to each other, yet there seems to be a loss of depth within relationships. At the end of the day, you can't rely on technology to build and maintain any of your relationships. Many times when I am driving I'll find myself thinking of my close friends and though we might send messages via social media, or quick texts to each other, there simply is nothing more impactful and building than picking up the phone and calling them to talk. It takes effort, it takes initiative, and it takes planning. The same goes for prayer.
A weakness of mine is that I will sometimes "busy" myself out of relationship with God. There are many excuses you can make for why you're not communicating with God, but none of them should be used. Our Creator, our Lord, our Best Friend wants your call more than anything. During the Holiday season, it is even easier to busy yourself to where you might neglect the very reason we are joyfully celebrating!
This week at Thanksgiving, my older sister and I had an impromptu moment where we started signing "Merry Christmas Darling" by The Carpenters. We knew all the words, we knew all the changes in the song, and we knew how to sing it together. Her husband was amazed and asking "What is going on here?" The reason why we knew this song so well and could sing it together is because every year when we were little we would drive around town and look at lights with our parents and my mom would play this song. The years that all three of us kids listened to this song and learned it together gave us another layer of bonding that only we would understand. This is what a relationship with God is like. Much like my sister knew exactly how I would sing my parts, God knows everything about you. God knows everything that has happened to you. When you spend time with God and give Him your fullest attention, you will joyously sing a beautiful song. To get to that point though it takes effort. It takes more than just reading the daily Bible verse. It takes a daily dedication of your day to God. Your schedule will try and tell you this is an obligation, but I promise you this is a joyous event.
My prayer for you this week is that you block time out in the first part of your day, and you dedicate that time to building your relationship with God through prayer. There is nothing that God doesn't know about you and He wants everything for you. Go to Him for help and for the greatest relationship you'll ever have.
Have a great week!
